Uniqueness
Uniqueness is the one thing we all have in common.
The thing that interests me most about the term uniqueness is the obvious contradiction that lays within.
Uniqueness is defined in the dictionary as 'the quality to be one of a kind', no second exists. Uniqueness is a genetical fact, we are all unique, even identical twins are different from each other and therefore unique.
The only thing we all truly have in common is our uniqueness. How can uniqueness be so common?
This weird contradiction between 'in common' and 'unique' gives us a strong urge to express ourselves, to underline our uniqueness.
We want to define who we are, because, without our uniqueness we would be interchangeable, and our existence would not be significant.
The art of graffiti is a clear example for this need of self-expression and it also has a weird contradiction within. On the one hand the artist very openly and aggressively expresses his uniqueness for everybody to see. On the other hand they seem to hide their uniqueness in the complete anonymity of their art.
This series shows my interest for this way of expressing oneself.
